Watoo

Blotched markings give the watoo camouflage in areas of scrubby woodland.

The watoo, Ungulagus cento, is a large, spotted rabbuck from the African tropical grasslands. It carries large angular blotches similar to those once possessed by the giraffe. The taller grasses are grazed by vast herds of rabbucks like these.

Such patterns make individuals merge into one another so that a distant predator gets only a confused impression of the herd as a whole. It is particularly effective in thorn thickets and areas of scrubby woodland.
